Responding to War

War is a very complex subject which demands a response from all of us. Deciding how to respond is a spiritual challenge for which we are seldom ready. This page will draw together resources to help craft a response whether you are visiting this page as an individual, or as a leader needing to resource a group. The links to other sites offered here are intended to assist you in your search for resources, and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Center for Peacemaking and Conflict Studies.

Jesus taught his followers to love their enemies. We live in a world of violence and armament. What do Mennonite Brethren believe about peacemaking?

Jesus calls us to be "reconcilers" or peacemakers (2 Cor. 5:17-20). Our mission is to teach people how to be at peace with God, with others, and with themselves (Eph. 2:14-17). Mennonite Brethren are active peacemakers, taking the lead in victim-offender reconciliation ministries. We seek to alleviate suffering, reduce strife, and promote justice as ways of demonstrating Christ's love. We view violence in its many forms as contradictory to the good news of Jesus (Matt. 5:17-28, 38-48). One of the ways we witness to peace is to give alternate service in times of national conscription or war. For more information, see Article 13 of our confession of faith.
